Dragon Shift Tutorial Notes - Don’t Panic

Note: this is a draft that will continuously be updated in the next day or so… Good luck :)

Dragon shift tutorial notes - look around Smaug for documentation (posted on the wall) on crashing systems & Don’t Panic

Every hour you should check the gas target pressure/temperature and the beam intensity on FC4 And the more detail you put into the midas elog the better!!

Beam Intensity and Gas Pressure:

- Minimum expected beam (for S2013): 0.64 nA. If the current drops below this during a rossum cup reading of FC4 call ops and kindly request that they work on it. Also call them if you see Large fluctuations which  indicate unstable beam. Then notify dragon expert.

- Target pressure should be ~7 Torr in EPICS (±0.2 Torr tolerance).

- For gas target issues/ if it needs to be topped up, contact a DRAGON expert.

- Target temperature: ~35.9 °C. If spiking, check LN2 cooling; reset in EPICS vacuum system if needed.

Terminal Usage:

- New terminal logs into Daenerys. You will need to ssh into Smaug: ssh -Y smaug

- If the DAQ crashes, in any directory on Smaug run `start_daq.sh`. Also restart Rossum.

- If RootBeer is empty/gone, then the DAQ has crashed.

RootBeer:

If this crashes…

- On Smaug, run `rbdragon`.

- Load histograms -> select setup and consult a DRAGON expert for correct plots.

- Double-click plots to open. To open multiple, click "Create New" first.

- Click "Start Refresh" and "Attach Online" – updates every few seconds with online data.

MIDAS

- Open Chrome in a new window, if not already open – all the bookmarks at the top are important/useful

- MIDAS status lets you know how the run is going.

- If you need to change anything, document this in the MIDAS elog (found on the sidebar of the webpage):

·       If there is a drop in beam intensity, gas pressure change, etc., make a log.

·       Ideal time for beam operators to take a snapshot of their setup is in between runs or mid-run. Then make an elog that ops took a snapshot.

·       If alarms go off, go to the alarms sidebar in MIDAS. If any are red, call a DRAGON expert.

Starting a New Run:

- Transition page: ensure all status bars are green and connected.

- If one is red, the connection failed. Go to programs on side bar and hit start.

- Status page: provides run info.

Rossum:

- Script for autostarting runs every hour.

- Used for checking transmission – should be done at the start of every run.

- Check values for Faraday cups upstream/downstream of the target.

- Restart Rossum if the DAQ crashes:

- `./startRossum_Li7.sh` to restart Rossum

- Start tasks, then start schedule.

- If auto-start fails, start a run first, then repeat the steps. If that fails call a dragon expert.

If Things Go Wrong:

- PUT THE FARADAY CUPS IN (labeled FC*** in optics section of EPICS).

- Call ops to insert FC4, or use `fc4in.sh` on Smaug to insert (and `fc4out.sh` to remove).

- Green = in, Grey = out.

Additional Notes:

- Main ISAC control has links to optics, vacuum system pages.

- If you need to start a run first then start Rossum, ENSURE YOU SELECT "WRITE DATA" when restarting the run.

- To add something to striptools, middle-click the parameter, drag it to striptool commands.
